One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Jared and I have decided that we must have pissed off the Gods or walked on some Indian Burial ground or something because lately it seems everything is going wrong. In most situations we take one step forward (thinking it will be an easy step) and end up taking 5 steps back.
When we first moved in to our new house it all began. The new water heater was a chore and then of course the faucet. So we took a little break from doing anything house related during the holidays because of time. Most of the stuff we have done to the house have been one headache after another and even after all the money spent no one knows but us. It's all underlying problems. For example the plumbing is not something that anyone else would notice but it's something we pretty much completely redid. So was getting the crawl space sprayed because unfortunately there was a fungus/mold growing where the previous owner allowed water to leak and did nothing about it which also caused us to have a high water bill of $200 for only 15 days worth of usage. We have now gotten that taken care of (fingers crossed) and after all the money paid out for the crawl space I feel like it's money down the drain. Not because it wasn't needed but because it doesn't make the house look better to outsiders or myself. The last maintenance thing we decided to take care of lately was getting the septic tank cleaned. It should have been an easy job, right? Wrong! We call the septic people out to get them to pump and clean it only to find out that not only do we need to replace one of the lids but that NONE of our field lines were working. So of course our beautiful backyard (it had nice grass which was a plus) has now been destroyed so that new field lines could be put in. We now have a backyard covered in dirt and clay BUT I keep trying to remind myself that should be a one time deal and we hopefully will never have to worry with it again. So $1600 and a torn up yard later we are done with that project.
This past weekend we decided since it's been 10 months since we have had a working oven we would purchase one, not only because we wanted a working one but because it would make the kitchen look better (just getting the old one out cuz it's hideous). We buy one and it's delivered on Wednesday. What seemed like such a great and easy process turns out to be just like everything else we have done...a headache! The delivery men come out to install our new oven and remove the old piece of junk and within the first 5 minutes I hear the words I was dreading (but somehow knew might happen) "we won't be able to remove your old oven". Turns out the old oven was wired directly into the wall...there was no outlet/plug. So the new oven was delivered and is currently sitting in the middle of my kitchen. A day off work was pretty much wasted so that they could say nothing would be taken care of and I'm back to where I started only this time with extra steps that need to be taken. Jared calls around and gets an electrician that can come out and help us with this problem. I take the morning off work (more time wasted) so that I can wait on the electrician to do his job (I am not knocking the electrician, he was great, prompt, polite, and quick). He cuts the wire, removes the old oven, and puts in a plug. Well, once the old oven is removed more things are brought to light. The new oven won't fit without cutting or redoing all the cabinets surrounding it. Turns out the cabinets were custom built to fit this particular oven from 1970 which also happens to be one of the smallest ovens I've ever seen. So I currently have a brand new oven (with no plug cuz the delivery men forgot to leave it) that we can't hook up cuz it won't fit and I have an old oven that doesn't work (but the stove part did) that has officially been cut so that the electrician could do his job also sitting in the middle of my kitchen. I'm worse off than when I started. I have two unusable ovens taking up space and basically no way to cook until this is taken care of. I'm aggravated and frustrated and tired of taking off work and using my time off and getting nothing accomplished.
However, Jared and I came home Thursday after work to discover Dusk (the youngest of our 3 dogs) had gotten out of her kennel and chewed a hole in the wall in the laundry room. When I say a hole I mean A HOLE! Pictures will be on facebook. She chewed through the wall and began chewing an electric wire from the outlet. Thankfully Jared and his dad knew how to fix dry wall and this issue was resolved by the next day.
They say buying your first house is a great experience and so far all I can say is it's definitely been interesting and a learning experience. Jared and I have learned to do a lot over the past 10 months. At this point nothing surprises us and we now understand nothing will be simple with this house. However, we can say we did it ourselves and be proud of the work that has been done. No one may be able to see it but we know it's done and we know in the end it's the right decision. Not only that but we did it TOGETHER and I guess that's half the fun (or at least that's what they say ha!)
